The Tesla Gigafactory in Austin

You don’t need to look far to realize that the Austin area is quite the hotspot of the tech industry. From major players like Dell, IBM, and Apple to small startups and everything in between, tech is thriving here. The newest kid on the block that has everyone buzzing with anticipation, of course, would be Tesla.

Ever since Elon Musk announced his company’s move to the Lone Star state in 2020, Austinites and pretty much everyone in the state have been curious about the company’s Gigafactory, aka Giga Texas. Where’s it going to be? What will they be making? How can I get a job there?

It was announced in December by Musk himself that the Gigafactory would be open in “early 2022,” complete with a “grand opening party.” Recently, Musk announced the party is planned for April 7th, with interactive tours, entertainment, and refreshments. The party will be by ticket and invitation only, and while we can’t get you on the grand opening party guest list, here’s what we can tell you about the Gigafactory.

Where is the Gigafactory going to be located?

While an innovative company like Tesla is obviously going to have a lot of top-secret cool stuff going on, its plant location isn’t so secret. In fact, it’s located off State Highway 130 just north of Highway 71 – just get off exit 446 to Tesla Road! You’ve no doubt seen it as the 4.5 million-square-foot facility is kinda hard to miss. Construction of the company’s headquarters wasn’t cheap either and cost around $1.1 billion

What’s Tesla going to be building in the Gigafactory?

Two primary vehicles of the Tesla fleet will be in production at the factory: the Model Y and Cybertruck. The Model Y is the company’s electric SUV and the Cybertruck, well, it’s a truck, but unlike any other truck that Texans have ever laid eyes on.

And in case you’re wondering about the possibility of Tesla’s sister company, SpaceX making rockets in the area … nope.  That will likely be happening near Waco, according to the Austin-American Statesman.

Jobs, jobs, and more jobs

With such a large factory, Tesla is going to be hiring a lot of folks to keep operations running. Musk said the company’s new plant would create upwards of 20,000 jobs and as of this writing, hundreds of positions ranging from manufacturing to robotics engineering were up for grabs on the Tesla career page.

Not only will the company itself be creating thousands of jobs, but thousands of secondary jobs are also expected to be created because of the factory’s ripple effect.

And because the Gigafactory is located on the eastern side of Austin, it’s pretty much a straight shot to Bastrop. That means locals who land a job with Tesla can be home in just about a half-hour’s drive.
